A stroll through Marstrand's history
Why is Marstrand so often talked about and visited? What is it that has charged the place with this magnetic appeal? Some would answer that's due to the sea views, the colours and the dramatic landscape, while others would say that the special Marstrand character is thanks to its past and the traces that history has left behind in the physical environment.
The remains of the medieval street layout, cobbled lanes, church, fortress, the harbour and the reminders of the town's heyday from the turn of the last century with all the fantastic homes erected then all of this contributes to the island's special character.
The royal presence here of King Oscar II was responsible for turning Marstrand into the leading bathing resort on Sweden's west coast. Royal glamour appealed to the upper classes of the day and attracted the very cream of Sweden's high society. Even today the present Swedish royal family enjoys visits to Marstrand and the island is regularly visited by leading Swedish and international figures. This royal lustre and the chance you still have of bumping into some well known personality can well explain some of the island's popularity.
Is it perhaps the mix of all these ingredients that makes this island so unique?
This island, set in the silver sea is not large but offers so much. That indefinable international touche is present here, together with top ranking restaurants serving fine food and wine, and with those exciting guests. Parties, shellfish and the harbour clamour for your attention. Here you'll find glorious bathing opportunities, fantastic sunsets and other natural beauties, and always somewhere to retreat for peace and quiet. This is a spot which we believe possesses it all.
We who have visited Marstrand, or still better actually live here, don't stop to wonder what it is that makes Marstrand so special. We know.

| In a unified gesture we are now changing the street lighting in Marstrand. The local authority covers the labour costs and we/the donors are paying for the lampposts themselves. These will help to reinforce the uniqueness of the Marstrand experience. Manufacture of these lamps is taking place at Rutgerssons and the project is expected to be completed by the time of this summer's major event, the Volvo Ocean Race. Buy your own lamppost!
